Halo Solar: Understanding the phenomenon that surprised Espirito Santo this Tuesday

A phenomenon known as the solar corona caught the attention of Espirito Santo on Tuesday morning (08). Looking at the sky, it was possible to notice a kind of rainbow around the sun (photos below).

in contact with Online TribuneReader Marissa Bernardo took a picture of the phenomenon in the municipality of Serra and revealed that she had never seen a solar corona before. “The photo was taken here at work, I’m a janitor at school. I thought it was so different, I was surprised I hadn’t seen it before. I asked the principal and he told me it was a solar halo,” says Marisa.

In short, the solar corona occurs from a mixture of clouds and rays of light. The optical effect occurs naturally when the sun’s rays pass through some large and high clouds, usually from periostealladen with ice crystals.

When the sun’s rays are refracted, they change direction and speed. Depending on its length, it acquires the basic colors of the visible spectrum, between blue and red.

This phenomenon appears most when the sun is close to the horizon at sunrise and sunset.
