Major General Sergei Goryachev was killed during a Ukrainian missile attack during the escalation of the Kiev counter-offensive, on Monday (12/6), in Zaporizhia. The soldier was the Chief of Staff of the 35th Army of Russia and Russian blogger Voincourt Kotenok reported his death.

“As a result of an enemy missile strike, the Chief of Staff of the 35th Combined Arms Army, Major General Sergei Goryachev, was killed,” Kotenok wrote on his Telegram channel.

According to the blogger, the soldier was killed while troops from the Russian Fifth Army were forced to leave the area.

“The Army has lost one of its most brilliant and effective military leaders, who combined the highest levels of professionalism with personal courage,” Kottenok added. The Russian Ministry of Defense has not commented on the issue yet.

Goryachev is not the first high-ranking Russian commander to die in conflicts across Europe. Ukraine war. Andrei Kolesnikov, Andrei Sokovetsky, Vitaly Gerasimov, Oleg Mityaev, Vyacheslav Makarov and Yevgeny Brovko were also killed in action during the invasion of the neighboring country.

The general was a highly ranked officer. During his career in Russian forces, he fought in the Second Chechen War, commanded a tank brigade, supervised a Russian military base in Tajikistan, and commanded Russian forces in the pro-Russian separatist region of Moldova in Transdniestria.

Ukrainian authorities said that in the past week they have recaptured seven villages that had been under the control of Russian forces since the beginning of the war.
