Mercedes-Benz and Will.I.Am Collaborate to Transform Car Inputs into Musical Creations

In a groundbreaking partnership, Mercedes-Benz and musician Will.I.Am have joined forces to develop technology that converts vehicle inputs and in-car signals into musical expressions. Known as MBUX Sound Drive, this innovative system reacts to the driver’s behavior, such as braking, acceleration, steering inputs, and energy recuperation, and transforms it into catchy tunes and melodies.

Unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024, MBUX Sound Drive will be featured in both current and future Mercedes-Benz models, revolutionizing the audio experience for drivers and passengers alike. The system activates when the car is stationary or at a stop sign, seamlessly blending music with the vehicle’s movement. As the speed increases, additional layers and melodies are added, enhancing the overall sound drive experience.

One of the standout features of MBUX Sound Drive is its ability to create unique and novel “propulsion noises.” Unlike traditional electric vehicle sound systems, which often mimic combustion engine sounds, this collaboration puts a refreshing spin on auditory technology. The result is an auditory landscape that is truly one of a kind.

Mercedes-Benz has high hopes for MBUX Sound Drive, aiming to transform it into an open music platform where artists and musicians can compose different genres of music compatible with the system. This innovative step towards music integration into the driving experience will revolutionize how people perceive and appreciate music in their cars, according to Will.I.Am. He believes that this technology will provide drivers with a multi-dimensional sound experience like never before.

The system is set to be available on all Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG vehicles equipped with the second-generation MBUX system in the second half of 2024. Moreover, existing drivers with compatible infotainment systems can receive the MBUX Sound Drive through an on-demand over-the-air update, ensuring that this cutting-edge technology is accessible to a wide range of Mercedes-Benz owners.

The collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and Will.I.Am has brought forth an extraordinary fusion of innovative automotive technology and musical creativity. With MBUX Sound Drive, car rides will no longer be just a means of transportation but a captivating symphony of musical expressions tailored to each driver’s unique journey.
