The Ministry identifies violations in 9 types of cottage cheese

An operation was conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock to detect fraud by adding starch to curd cheese sold on the Brazilian market in the states of Ceará, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Pará, Pernambuco, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and São Paulo.

There were 9 brands investigated – the volume did not disclose the names of the manufacturers.

With the aim of detecting fraud by adding starch to cream cheese sold in the Brazilian market, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) implemented a specific operation to collect samples of cream cheese and cream cheese in retail trade.

During the procedure, 180 samples were collected at 66 national institutions under the Federal Inspection Service (SIF), the State or District Inspection Service (SIE/SID) and the Municipal Inspection Service (SIM).

The results of the analysis indicated a non-compliance rate of 5%.

One of the samples was rejected because it was collected after the expiration date. Thus, out of 179 samples analyzed by the Federal Agricultural Defense Laboratories (LFDA), nine showed results for the presence of starch.

For each non-compliant sample, the tax procedures stipulated in the legislation were adopted with the producing facility, which includes precautionary seizure of products, in addition to evaluation in a specific administrative process.

Fraud by adding starch to curd cheese is characterized as economic fraud, that is, it does not correspond to what is declared on the product label.

Requeijão with added starch must contain information on a mixture of Requeijão and Starch in its sales name, according to the Technical Regulation for the Identity and Quality of Requeijão.

Therefore, any marketing without the label is considered consumer fraud, ”explains the Director of the Inspection Department for Products of Animal Origin, Ana Lucia Viana.

The process involved servants from the Animal Products Inspection Service II, III, IV, VI, X and XI.
