The United States and Albania have condemned Russia for its actions against Ukraine
2 min readDiplomatic sources say the United States and Albania have drafted a resolution condemning Russia’s actions in Ukraine and want to submit it to the UN Security Council.
The plan will fail because of Russia’s veto rights as a permanent member of the Security Council. In this case, the text will then be submitted to the General Assembly, where resolutions are not bound and vetoed.
This strategy was already in use after Russia annexed Crimea in 2014. Of the 15 members of the Security Council, Moscow vetoed the resolution and China ignored it. In the General Assembly, the plan received 100 votes out of a total of 193, with 11 abstaining, 58 abstaining, and the rest abstaining.
One of the diplomatic circles told the AFP that a vote on the US-Albanian plan could be held “in the coming days”. The group added that after many countries had openly criticized Russia’s actions, it was necessary to take advantage of the positive “momentum” at the UN.
In addition, during a lengthy meeting of the General Assembly this Wednesday (23), most countries condemned Russia’s conduct in Ukraine.
U.S. and Albanian embassy officials at the UN, for their part, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
