The Michigan women's basketball team showed that it can hold its own among the best teams in the country and maintain its position in the Monday 25th Poll.

Michigan (5-1) remained at No. 6 after its first loss of the season, but suffered a tough 72-69 loss to No. 1 UConn in what was the Huskies' home game.Michigan is coming off an 81-55 win over Syracuse on Sunday, and the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame Showcase is in Uncasville, Conn., Michigan on Wednesday at Detroit Mercy.

UConn passed its first tiebreaker test to remain No. 1. The Huskies received 30 of 32 first-place votes from a national media panel.

Michigan State (6-0) continues to roll through its non-conference schedule and moved up two spots to No. 20 after defeating two more opponents in Eastern Illinois (101-53) and Oakland (102-41) last week.The Spartans scored at least 92 points in all six games this season, and in half of them they reached triple figures.

Michigan opens Baha Mar Hoops action in the Bahamas on Friday against Temple (3-3).

North Carolina State, Baylor, Southern California and Oklahoma State fell in the polls after the losses.The Wolfpack were stunned by Rhode Island and dropped nine spots to No. 25. The Bears dropped eight spots after a loss to Iowa. The Trojans dropped seven spots to No. 18 after a two-point loss to Notre Dame.The Cowgirls dropped to No. 24 after the loss at St.John's.

The Southeastern Conference again has eight teams in this week's rankings, including three of the top five.The Big Ten has seven schools in the poll, the Big 12 five and the Atlantic Coast Conference four.The Big East has one.
