With the release of the exceptional withdrawal from the severance compensation fund (FGTS), the number of victims of scams has increased. Criminals use data from those who have not yet checked out and access the app cashier You must transfer up to 1000 BRL from your FGTS account. This way, when the victim accesses their digital social savings account, it is zeroed out.
Cybersecurity expert and CEO of Cyber Security at PSafe, Emílio Simoni, was consulted by O Globo to point out how these scams happen and how to protect yourself from them.
According to Emílio, one of the ways criminals can obtain victims’ data is through a phishing attack, when malicious links, similar to real ones, such as from supermarkets or well-known websites, streaming services and even government websites, are sent to the victim via SMS, social networking or email.
These links usually contain fake advertisements to promote products or prizes, which in order for the user to be able to redeem them, need to register. Therefore, it is necessary to be very careful when noticing these links that ask for personal data such as full name, address and especially CPF.
In 2021, criminals gained access to the personal data of 223 million Brazilians through an information leak.
To find out if your data has been leaked, there are security companies that do this type of monitoring, such as the PSafe app (available for Android And the iOS). However, there is no official way to know if the data has been exposed, as it can be leaked from secret databases.
How do you protect yourself?
To protect yourself from these scams, you always need to check if they are really official sites before you sign up. It is also important to register on the official Caixa Tem app (available for Android And the iOS), which was developed by Caixa Econômica Federal.
To apply the FGTS scam, criminals use the worker’s CPF and RG, but as a third party email and phone address. Registering with your own email and phone number allows citizens to access before criminals.
It’s worth noting that you can log into Caixa Tem even if the feature hasn’t been released yet.
I fell for a scam, what should I do?
If you suspect that you have fallen for FGTS fraud, you should take screenshots that will be used as evidence to prove the theft, and provide the statement and any dissimilar data, such as an email address or phone number that was not registered.
After collecting the evidence, you should contact Caixa, at a physical branch or through the exclusive complaints channel via phone number 0800 512667.
