US President Joe Biden spoke by telephone with his Mexican envoy Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Friday (29), just days before Obrador’s trip to Central America on the border migration crisis and the US summit.

The leaders talked for almost an hour about the importance of regional work “to ensure a safe and sustainable livelihood for their citizens and immigrants,” the Mexican government said in a statement, reiterating the proposal by the left-wing Mexican president.

The text states that “efforts to create jobs in Central America and expand legal avenues for immigrants and refugees” were again discussed in the intergovernmental dialogue.

Earlier, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said, “Most of the dialogue is about current work on migration and integration, economic integration, taking steps to reduce cross-border migration.” The two spoke for 52 minutes, in a “very creative” tone. On Twitter, Lopez Obrador posted that the conversation was good.

– ‘We must believe’ –

The migration crisis is one of the major problems for both the United States and Mexico.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection says 7,800 illegal immigrants a day per day have been stranded on the Mexican border in the past three weeks, almost five times higher than the 2014-2019 average before the Covit-19 epidemic.

And that number could increase with the repeal of Title 42 in May, by which the United States expels all illegal immigrants. That decision separates Republicans and some Democrats from states bordering Mexico.

“With more personnel and resources on both sides of our border, we must rely more on our partnership than ever before to get a concerted response to the escalation, to ensure an orderly and humane response to the flow of migrants,” a U.S. official said. The name of the crowd is unknown.

– United States Summit –

Ahead of the meeting, another official, who did not want to be named, said the leaders would also discuss priorities for the US summit scheduled for June in Los Angeles in the context of the economic impact of the war in Ukraine. He also pointed out that they will explore ways to enhance the post-epidemic economic recovery in the region.

Lopez Obrador will travel to Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Belize and Cuba next week. Mexican President Marcelo Efrard will travel to Washington to “advance affairs” ahead of the conference.

Both countries are keen to mobilize a broad response in the United States, and “work closely with Mexico and other key partners to advance a strong declaration that points to the future and reflects a sense of shared responsibility for migration,” he said. .

“We have a solid and forward-thinking economic agenda within the framework of high-level economic dialogue,” he said, adding that “we are committed to strengthening supply chains and moving our economies toward future businesses.”

This does not mean that there are no differences between Mexico and its main trading partner. The government of Lopez Obrador did little to heed Washington’s call for a strong front against Russia by occupying Ukraine, and supported a neutral position.
