What price increases for you
How much a Dell laptop will cost next week depends on how much memory and space you need.
Global defects are found in two major types of chips that are essential components in most consumer devices: DRAM and NAND.

Starting next week, Dell Pro and Pro Max notebooks and desktops with 32GB of storage will cost between $130 and $230 more, according to a list of price changes seen by Business Insider.If you choose 128GB of storage, the price will increase to between $520 and $765 per device.
Choosing a laptop with 1TB of storage increases the total cost by $55 to $135.
A Dell employee who works in sales said the percentage increase would be “between 10% and 30%” depending on the contract.They spoke on condition of anonymity because they cannot speak publicly, but Business Insider verified their employment.

How Dell tells salespeople to be prepared

"The global supply of memory and storage is shrinking rapidly," Dell warned members of the GTM team.
"Contract prices for DRAM and NAND chips have already increased significantly this quarter, and suppliers are indicating further increases and supply disruptions due to AI demand," Dell said in an email.
The company asked its vendors to "move decisively" ahead of the price hike to "protect value for our customers and for Dell."
The email advised teams to engage with top accounts in the coming week, close deals and plan for key opportunities and multi-quarter deals to protect the sales pipeline.
"An order today does not lock in the current price for future delivery," Dell warned, but said it will help customers who act now stay ahead of "significant expected storage growth."
The Dell sales official said there was an initial rush to help customers buy remaining stock, but now the situation is seen as largely "out of our control."
Dell absorbs some of the costs internally, through a hit to margins and limited discounts offered to sales staff, the employee said.
In the company's third-quarter earnings call on Nov. 25, Dell COO and vice chairman Jeff Clark said the increase in market value was "phenomenal."
"We have not seen debt continue at the rate we saw," said Clarke Clarke, "we said. "Demand is an important way.But we're going through that, we're going to stick to what we've always done."
Why is there a shortage of chips?
Tech companies are buying large quantities of DRAM and NAND to power artificial intelligence models and cloud services, leaving fewer chips for consumer devices.
Coupled with tensions in the international supply chain, the outbreak has prompted three companies that own the DRAM market - Samsung, Synex and Mineron - to raise their prices.
Global technology market research firm Counterpoint said it expects DRAM prices to rise 30% in the final quarter of 2025, following a 50% rise so far this year.
