Jane Austen's happiness is difficult for her to be a final champion of belief for what it is

Jane Austen's Paper Trail is a podcast of The Conversation celebrating the 250th anniversary of the author's birth.In each episode, we'll explore a different aspect of Austen's personality by interviewing researchers from one of her novels.Along the way, we visit places important to Austen as a special aspect of her life and the time she lived in. In Episode 6, we find out if Jane was happy using her last published novel, Persuasion, as a guide.

Since the happy ending in Jane Austen's novels primarily revolves around a romantic relationship with the aspiring hero, some may conclude that because Austen stayed with her for the rest of her life, happiness must have eluded her.But this revolutionary writer was a woman who gave meaning to her life through her interests, friendships, social connections, travel, and, above all, purpose.

Of course the couch has the same curry as the worry.After the death of his father, his mother, and Cassandra's sister took a bath and bathed in Manna.A life of poverty is distinguished by close relationships with the women in his life, including Marta's good friends and a close relationship with a sister who will discuss the staging case.

Like the heroine of his heart, Annie Elliott, Anita did not have a bath. She was a young woman in the countryside of Hampshire, but she became the oppressor of the city if she had a growing social noise.

Here the women led a more comfortable life and gave Austen the space and peace to write.In 1815, in Chawton, she wrote her last novel, Persuasion, a story of happiness lost and regained.The suicidal Anne Elliot, whose prime has faded and is probably past its peak at 27, still longs for Frederick Wentworth, the man she had to give up years ago, when he comes back into her life as a dashing naval captain.

In the sixth episode of Jane Austen's Paper Trail, Jane Wright joins Nada Sadau from the University of Cumbria, whose research aims to answer the question:Was Jane happy?

Austen's love of walking is reflected in the character of Anne, who finds restoration and renewal in this work.The two enjoy the sea breeze at the Cobh in Lyme Regis to learn what this coastal Dorset town meant to Austen and how it inspired a key scene in Persuasion where Anne and Wentworth unravel their affair.

Then Anna Walker sits down with two other Austen experts - John Mullan, a literature professor at University College London, and Freya Johnston, an English professor at Oxford University - to explore the clues that Persuasion offers about Austen's own happiness.

Johnston pored over Austen's remaining letters."She often sounded angry. She also sounded bitter...but there was also a lot of happiness in the letter. Definitely proud of her accomplishments as a writer, and that writing was a joy."

Mullan believes that Austen also found happiness in her family: "I think if you could gather at an Austen family gathering, [you'd find that] it was a very good family. I think they were open, intelligent, funny, optimistic people."
